CAPTAIN EDDIE'S FISHING REPORTS-2002

November 8, 2002

We decided to make a run to Snow's Cut. Arriving we opened the lid on the live well and the overflow pipe had jumped off, releasing our bait. We both looked like someone licked the red off our candy! We had a half pound of shrimp so we ran out of the Carolina Beach Inlet and up the beach to John's Creek where we caught grey trout and black drum. We ended up having a nice day. We had a nice day remembering fishing with Daddy and Steve and wishing Matthew was with us.

November 7, 2002

My son Kevin came down from Raleigh and we put the boat in about 10:30 AM and ran to the Shallotte River. We caught 4 flounder, one being 4 lbs. and a nice 25-inch drum. Click here to see the nice fish.

October 20, 2002

I fished today with Joe and Kim from Raeford, NC. We caught 12 fish with one being over 14 inches. It was a beautiful day on the water. We listened to the Winston Cup Race. The water temp ranged from 68-70, wind was out of NE at 5-15 knots, and the air temp ranged from 68 to a nice 80 degrees. Click here to see the picture.

October 19, 2002

I fished with my sons Kevin and Matthew from Raleigh, NC today. We celebrated Kevin's 28th birthday, catching 16 with 4 being really nice flounder. We had a really good time. The boys enjoyed listening to the NC State vs. Duke game. They are NC State graduates. The water temp ranged from 68-70 degrees, air temp ranged from 68-80 degrees, and the wind was out of NE at 5-15 knots. Click here for picture.

October 17, 2002

I fished today with Scott and Kim from Apex, NC. The fish bit steadily all morning and we enjoyed the "oldies" station on a nice afternoon. We caught 17 flounder, with 2 being 18 1/2" and 19 1/2". The wind ranged from NW at 5-15 knots to SE at 5-10 knots. The water temp was 68.4 degrees and air temp ranged from 53-75 degrees. Click here for picture.

**********************************

The air and water temperatures are cooling. By Thursday, the 10th, Friday, the 11th and Saturday, the 12th, the fishing should really improve and the tides will be high in the middle of the day. (which is perfect for this time of the year) Email or call and we will go get them! I have these dates open right now.

October 4, 2002

I fished with Greg, Mark and James from Fayetteville, NC. The water still had alot of color with low tide being in the middle of the day. We decided to go out of the Lockwood Folly Inlet and check out the Spanish. I'll bet there was 150 King boats fishing the US Open Tourney. Mark caught a net full of pogeys and we got a cutoff. We cruised down the beach and entered the Shallotte Inlet and went to Hughes Marina for lunch. Fished inside after lunch. We managed to catch an inshore slam of a flounder, a drum and a grey trout. Wind was SE at 5-10 knots, water temp at 79 degrees and air temp at 89 degrees. Check out the picture here.

October 3, 2002

I fished today with Jay from Charlotte and his father Ralph from West Va. The tides were against us with low being at 12:31 PM. The discolored water out of the river shut them down. We caught 1 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon on the incoming tide. Wind was S at 5-10 knots, water temp ranged from 77-79 degrees and air temp ranged from 72 tp 89 degrees. Click here for picture.

October 2, 2002

I fished today with Phil from Greensboro and Dave who has a place at Holden Beach. We caught some nice mullet minnows in the ICW and were off. We went out Lockwood Folly Inlet and traveled to AR 425 to fish for flounder and drum. Dave hung a really nice drum (we think) that after a couple of nice runs wrapped the line in the structure and broke off. We noticed the glass minnows trying to hide near the boat and some of the biggest Spanish mackerel I've seen this year attacking them. Phil rigged a mullet on a light spinning rod and tossed it out and it took everyone's mind off flounder and drum. The Spanish would explode on the mullet minnows and on the light tackle. It made for a thrilling day! Wind was ESE, changing to S at 5-15 knots. Water temp was 77 degrees and air temp ranged from 73 to 90 degrees. Click here for pictures.

September 17, 2002

Fished today with Beverly from Wilmington, NC and Kris from New York. We had a fun day! High tide was 5:57AM. We started fishing around 8:30 and fished until 11:30 when the water from all the rains came out of the Shallotte River and muddied up the Shallotte Inlet. We managed to catch 3 flounder (1 keeper) and some nice blues. We went to Provisions for lunch and then to Lockwood Folly Inlet to fish the incoming tide. The seaweed and the biting flies rolled in. You could kill one and 3 would come to the funeral. We decided to do some sightseeing so we cruised up Lockwood Folly River and enjoyed the sites and wildlife. I checked the GPS and didn't realize we had traveled 52 miles for the day. The new boat is so comfortable I couldn't believe it! It was a nice day on the water with some nice folks. Check out the picture here!

September 13, 2002

I fished with Charlie from Watha, NC and one of his sons Cooter from Wilmington, NC. We caught 5 flounder, with the largest being a nice thick 20 1/2" fish. Cooter also managed to get an inshore slam of a pinfish, oyster toad and lizzard fish. (ha, ha) Charlie hung a really nice drum that was stripping line until it got off. If it was a flounder it surely would have topped the 17 1/2 pounder that he caught last year. We also checked out the front deck on the new boat with a fly rod. It is stable and works really well. Check out the pictures and let's go get some drum and trout this fall!

September 6, 2002

I fished today with Terry and Jane from Savannah, GA and Al from Chicago, IL. The air temp was 85 degrees, wind NE at 5-15 knots, and water temp at 80.2 to 82.5 degrees. We caught 4 flounder, with 2 being nice keepers and a lot of blues. The water is clearing and cooling so email me and let's go get them. Click here for results.

September 5, 2002

I fished with Gene from High Point today. The air temp was 87 degrees, wind ESE at 5-7 knots, and water temp ranging from 80.5 to 82.7 degrees. We caught 5 flounder with 2 being nice keepers. The water got tea- like after a couple of hours of the falling tide and also warmed about 2 degrees and the bite shut down. Click here for pictures.

August 29, 2002

Went out to catch bait with Marvin and Gary from Holden Beach today. Dodging showers, we had a nice breakfast and lunch at Hughes Marina and still managed to bring home two nice fish (17 1/2" and 14 1/2") before the skies let go. Marvin also caught two at a time but they were a little bit short of 13" minimum. I think he was trying to show off for Gary. Water temp has cooled down to 81 degrees and the fishing should really be good when the water clears up from all the rain. Check out the results!

August 24, 2002

I fished today with Dennis and John from Dillon, SC. The wind was SW at 5-10 knots, air temp was 79-97 degrees, and water temp was 83.2- 85.4 degrees. We caught 10 flounder with 3 being really nice fish--15", 14 1/2" and 13 1/4". John also caught a puppy drum. The days are getting shorter and the water is going to cool this week with the front. It should help the fishing! Click here for pictures.

August 23, 2002

I fished with Horace from Snow Hill, NC and John from Rocky Mount on Friday. The wind was SSW at 5-10 knots, air temp was 79-96 degrees, and the water temp was 83.2- 85.3 degrees. We caught 9 flounder with 5 being nice fish, a 20", 16", 2- 15", and 14 1/2". The shade from the T-top really paid off! Click here for results.

August 14, 2002

I'm Back!! Took the new boat out with Brian, who starts college next week, for the shakedown cruise. I was worried about the 115 with the trolling plate going slow enough but my worries were put to rest! The 1st fish in the boat was a 6.7 lb. flounder. We also caught a 4.7 lb., 4.6 lb. and a 2.75 lb. We lost one fish that was between 4.5 and 5 lbs. I was so happy with the boat that I caught myself waving at people on jet skis. My friend Charlie came down and we scouted out new areas to fish and caught up with our fish stories on Thursday and Friday. LET'S GO FISHIN'
Check out the results and see my new boat here

June 27, 2002

We found out why the big fish bit like they did yesterday! It poured rain, off and on all day! But Greg and Ron from Fayetteville were not going to be denied their flounder. We fished the same areas as yesterday but the rain had cooled the water from 82 yesterday to 76.2 in the flats. Our better action was on the falling tide when it warmed the water to 77.7 in spite of the rain. The wind was SSW at 15 to a bone-chilling 25 knots. The air temp was in the 70's. We ended up catching 11 with 4 being nice keepers. Oh, yea, we got the other seven back in the water before they drowned! We had a good time and a fun day. Catch the picture here!

June 26, 2002

Fished with Darryl from Beckley, WV, and sons Darryl, Jr. from Parkersburg, WV, and Roger from Charlotte, NC. What a Day! The fish were biting in the mouth of the Shallotte River as soon as we started fishing. We caught 25 flounder with 15 being keepers. 3 were 20 inches, 1- 19 inches, 4- 18 inches, 1- 17 1/2 inches, 1- 16 inches, 3- 15 inches, and 2- 13 1/2 inches. We got a shower early that turned the bigger fish on. They bit excellent until the slack high tide. We caught 6 of the 25 on the falling tide. Air temp was 77-89 degrees, wind out of SW at 15-20 knots, and water temp ranged from 80-82 degrees. We had a ball--someone forgot to tell the WV boys they shouldn't be able to catch flounder like that! See the action here!

June 15, 2002

Well, the day finally arrived! My sons and daughter who live in Raleigh, NC, came down to fish the Holden Beach Fishing Club Tournament. It poured down rain at low tide on Friday afternoon (3/4 inch), beating the mud flats up the river and making the water look like 3-day-old tea. Then we got another frog-strangler Sat. morning about 5:00, when I was pouring some coffee down my neck. I thought to myself that we might be in some trouble.

My sons Kevin and Matthew, our buddy Brian, and myself left the dock about 6:00 to look for bait. We decided to buy some nice mud minnows at Tripp's Fishing Center and headed to the Shallotte River. We ran until we hit the mud line from the rains and began fishing at 6:40AM. We didn't get a bite until 8:35. It was a 16-inch keeper. At 9:15 we caught a 12 1/2 in., at 9:35 a 10-inch, at 10:10 a 13 1/2 inch keeper, at 10:15 a 12 1/2 inch, at 11:30 a 19 1/2 inch, at 11:35 a 10 inch, and at 11:50 a 12 3/4 inch fish.

At 12:30 when the tide almost stopped, Kevin's rod got a solid tap, then as the boat eased forward, the rod started to bend slightly. Kevin eased the rod forward to give the fish time to kill and swallow the medium-sized mud minnow. As the rod tightened again, Kevin set the hook and it didn't move. Then, as Brian described it, "It sounded like Papa Marvin's diesel truck trying to crank", on the 5500C Ambassador reel's drag. And the Ugly Stick rod doubled over and the fish was on. I pulled back on the throttle to idle forward and the boat stopped moving forward. As Kevin put as much pressure as he dared on the fish, Brian and Matthew went into action clearing all rods from the water. Brian took the helm and I got the net. As Kevin wound the reel, it moved the boat backwards until the line was straight down. Then the swivel came into view. The hair on the back of my neck stood up as the fish came into view about 3 ft. down. I eased the net into the water and under the fish as he came up. He saw the boat and dived toward the bottom but it was the bottom of the net that he hit. I strained to lift him into the boat. Then we celebrated!! It was a time that none of us will ever forget. The fishing was over! Everyone was shaking so it was hard to bait a hook. So we went to Hughes Marina and got a basket of fried squash and sweet tea. Oh, yea, the flounder was 28 1/2 inch and weighed 9 1/2 lbs., four hours after he was caught! He was probably 10 lbs. when caught!

Those of you that have fished with me know the hooks that caught him. Those that haven't need to. One trip and you will know how to catch flounder for the rest of your life. I don't hold back secrets while we are fishing. Oh, yea, we won the tournament again! Email or call me for a trip!! Click here for the great pictures!!
